We currently hold a number of specialist contracts that deliver services to meet the specific needs of people with disability, young people and at-risk youth, job seekers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, job seekers who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and ex-offenders.

Wilmar wins the National Employer Partnership Award

Michelle Reynolds, HR co-ordinator for Victoria Mill, said Job Futures intrinsic knowledge of the sugar industry and Victoria Mill operations made it possible for Wilmar to maximise opportunities for local job seekers.

Wilmar's Victoria Mill has been recognised for their efforts to build career opportunities for the unemployed in the Ingham region of Queensland, being named as the inaugural recipient of the National Employer Partnership Award at the 2014 Job Futures National Conference.

"As one of the most significant employers in the region, Wilmar has shown a genuine commitment to help change lives through employment in Ingham," Job Futures CEO, Matt Little, said. "They were a clear standout to be this year's award recipient."

The national employer partnership award recognises a business that is proactive in reducing local disadvantage by providing sustainable employment opportunities for the long-term unemployed. It also takes into account local Job Futures members who individualise their employment solutions to meet the recruitment expectations of business.

"It's a partnership that works because Job Futures understands the type of roles we have at Wilmar, the skills required for each role, as well as the personal attributes that ensure they thrive as an employee with us," HR co-ordinator for Victoria Mill, Michelle Reynolds, said.

Breakthrough: Up to 56% outcomes increase

Matt Little, CEO of Job Futures, says, "The model represents a significantly new way of working in Employment Services and is delivering better results for Australia's unemployed."

Job Futures Turning Point Assessment Model was developed in conjunction with leading UK research organisation Esher House and launched in October 2013.

This unique assessment approach is used to differentiate between job seekers that are able to gain and sustain employment and those that require more intensive support in order to secure employment. This has enabled Job Futures to effectively match the type of assistance it provides to individual job seekers regardless of how long they have been unemployed.

The model focuses on administering an applied psychology assessment that accurately identifies what "stage of change" the job seeker is in. Those who are found to be in the ACTING (ACTION) stage of change are what are normally referred to as "work ready". They are willing and able to work and can be directed towards activities best designed to help them gain and maintain employment.

Job seekers that are assessed in the other stages of change can be assigned appropriate interventions that will move them into the ACTING (ACTION) phase.

Local partnerships achieve results through Work for the Dole

Work Experience Co-ordinator Patrick Taylor talks about his experience regenerating the river banks of the Burnett River.

After the floods in February 2013 devastated local farms and businesses along the Burnett River, many areas were left stripped of trees and top soil. Something needed to be done to repair and strengthen the Burnett River banks.

Job Futures member Community Solutions partnered with the Burnett Mary River Group and Burnett Catchment Care Association to create a Work for the Dole Community Action Group. The project also collaborated with other local JSA providers to ensure sufficient participants.

This was the first time an activity had been undertaken with the aim of drawing on all local JSA providers and has received full support from the Department of Employment. This project includes the repair and re-vegetation of 20 sites along the Burnett River. Already four participants have been offered ongoing employment.

Horticulture social enterprise

Ngulla Training & Community Centre is an innovative, horticultural-based social enterprise of Job Futures member Bridging the Gap. The enterprise is aimed at generating employment and work place training opportunities for local youth, job seekers and the community. Ngulla training is focused on experiential learning with written material encompassing just 25% of core learning in order to eliminate issues of numeracy and literacy shortfalls within the student body.

In this financial year both accredited and non-accredited training programs have been delivered including work experience in building and construction, handy-man projects and plant propagation, as well as Certificate II in Conservation & Land Management.

In partnership with CSBP, a traineeship program for Indigenous people was developed where two young trainees will attain their Certificate II in Conservation & Land Management whilst working on projects to enhance the landscaping at CSBP's Kwinana site. Upon completion the trainees will be supported by both Bridging the Gap and CSBP to help them gain full-time employment. It is intended that this will be an ongoing traineeship program with a major employer in the Kwinana Industrial Area.

Turning job seekers into small business owners

Job Futures member MTC Australia assists job seekers in obtaining support from the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) which allows eligible unemployed people to start their own small businesses. MTC then guides participants through the process of establishing their own business.

Turning Point: 26 week outcomes

The graph illustrates that 26-week outcomes have increased by up to 56% for those who are hardest to place and maintain employment.

Its implementation has increased performance across the board in all streams from 13 week to 26 week outcomes and improved the utilisation of our resources through a better focus of time.

Our Turning Point Assessment Model seeks to determine the most suitable time to deliver specific activities to job seekers to help move them towards employment.

The model is based on an applied psychological assessment to accurately identify the 'state of change' in which a job seeker is in.

Designed in partnership with Esher House, the model is delivering promising results with placements for job seekers. (JF/Esher House internal data).

Job Futures reaches into remote Western Australia

When working with large employers in the Broome region, particularly the resources industry, there are complex recruitment requirements.

For example, to supply Rio Tinto with staff for their annual employment program (entry level personnel for their Pilbara iron ore mines), Job Futures member Kimberly Employment Services identifies potential candidates up to a year before the recruitment period. This is done so that they can optimally prepare candidates by addressing issues such as driver's licences, literacy and numeracy, Cert II in Infrastructure and Resources, and alerting them to the challenges of a remote fly in/fly out lifestyle. Preparation also includes flying the candidates to the mine site for a paid orientation shift.

Over their five year relationship with Rio Tinto this approach has proved very successful, with five out of the six employees from last year's intake still in employment 12 months later.

Industry immersions help 97% of participants find employment

Job Futures member Employment Directions (South Australia) conduct employer site visits and industry-specific immersions in the childcare, viticulture and auto industries to ensure job seekers know what to expect and give employers the opportunity to meet with potential employees.

For example, to prepare young job seekers for vineyard work they run a pruning course. Employers are invited to attend, observe the participants pruning the vines and then interview them for employment. The result? Over the last 3 years (2011-14): 97% of the participants have gained employment, with 35 13 week outcomes and 22 26 week outcomes.

Support for health industry in Tasmania

By keeping up to date with changes in the local econo-my, Job Futures member IntoWork (Tasmania) is able to adapt to and support changes in the labour market.

Health Care and Social Assistance were identified as having the largest increase in employment, accounting for 31.4% of jobs growth over the 5 years to May 2014. Through surveying employers in Ulverstone and Laun-ceston, IntoWork recognised a lack of understanding of the needs of residents and the realities of the industry by auxiliary staff (kitchen hands, laundry and general cleaning staff).

From this research they designed the Hospitality in the Health and Aging Industry Course which covered units from relevant training packages, including needs of the elderly and dementia patients. 10 participants com-menced and completed the course of which 8 gained employment. Following this success more classes were delivered in the region with 22 participants, 14 of whom have secured employment.

FoodWorks partnership meets employer workforce demand

Job Futures member BUSY At Work has developed "Your Skills Your Way", an employer demand-led program for the North Brisbane area. The program provides employers, partner RTOs and job seekers with: a managed job seeker engagement, screening and selection process; development and delivery of a training plan addressing skill sets that have proved successful in the occupation; and, career mapping and mentoring upon placement.

Under this program BUSY At Work will partner with FoodWorks to create approximately 15 retail positions for participants across 10 FoodWorks locations.

The program will also partner with ICE (Institute of Culinary Excellence), QTIC (Queensland Tourism Industry Council), and their members, offering job seekers the opportunity to complete a Scholarship in Culinary Excellence. This will be supported by Brisbane's top chefs who operate five star fine dining restaurants. Upon completion successful scholars will be offered apprenticeships within member businesses. Participants will be supported for 12 months through a partnered mentoring package between BUSY At Work and ICE.
